Strategies for Accelerating New Display Industry Development

In recent years, with the continuous advancement of technology and the sustained growth of market demand, China's new display industry has ushered in an opportunity for vigorous development. "In 2024, the global emerging display industry development shows a clear upward trend, and OLED technology has ushered in its golden age and key window period," said Liang Xinqing, Executive Deputy Chairman and Secretary-General of the Liquid Crystal Branch of the China Optoelectronics Association.

According to data from market research institution Omdia, it is expected that by 2030, at least 20% of global vehicles will be equipped with three or more screens, maintaining a growth rate of 6.5% per year, and the global shipment volume in 2030 will reach 238 million pieces.

Liang Xinqing stated that China's display industry has experienced a long-term development stage of following, paralleling, and leading in the field of small-sized OLED. Now, the mid-sized OLED market is on the eve of an outbreak. Seizing this opportunity is expected to help China's emerging display industry achieve a "leading" position globally.

Industry insiders said that in response to the increasing demand for AMOLED in the mid-size market, it is particularly crucial to accelerate the construction of high-generation production lines at this stage. High-generation production lines can not only increase output but also reduce costs through economies of scale, which is crucial for enhancing market competitiveness.

Faced with this development opportunity, global panel manufacturers are actively planning and accelerating the construction of high-generation capacity.

Recently, China's high-generation OLED production line construction has ushered in new progress. On September 25, Hefei Guoxian Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Hefei Guoxian") held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 8.6th generation AMOLED production line. It is reported that this is the world's first 8.6th generation AMOLED production line equipped with FMM-free technology (ViP) and is also an advanced high-generation AMOLED production line globally.

Industry experts said that its construction will further tap the growth potential of AMOLED, accelerate into the new blue ocean of mid-size, and help China's new display to occupy a more advantageous position in the global AMOLED industry competition.

The production line is located in the Hefei New Station High-tech Zone, with a total investment of 55 billion yuan, and the designed production capacity is 32,000 glass substrates per month (size of 2290mm×2620mm). Hefei Guoxian is responsible for the investment, construction, and operation of the production line, and the company will be funded by Visionox and Hefei City Investment Platform.

It is understood that this production line has several technical highlights: facing mid to large-sized products, the new production line is the first to carry FMM-free technology - ViP technology (Visionox Intelligent Pixelization Technology), which can improve product performance and production efficiency compared to traditional technology. At the same time, the production line adopts brand new "LTPO+" (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide) technology, COE (color film formed on the thin film packaging) technology, and Tandem OLED (stacked evaporation display) technology to meet the low power consumption, high brightness, and long life requirements of mid to large-sized OLED panels.

Compared with the 6th generation line, the new production line can improve the cutting efficiency and economy of mid to large-sized OLED products. In terms of application fields, the 8.6th generation line can cover multi-size applications such as tablets, notebooks, vehicles, and monitors, driving the update and iteration of downstream terminals.What is the significance of the construction of this production line? Zhang Deqiang, Chairman and President of Visionox, said that the construction of Hefei Guoxian's 8.6th generation AMOLED production line is aimed at meeting national and industrial needs.

At the same time, competition in the new display industry is no longer a competition of scale as before, but is gradually turning into a competition of efficiency and value. Ouyang Zhongcan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a theoretical physicist, said that the new production line leads industrial transformation with innovative technology, which is of great importance to our country's emerging display industry to seize the high ground of OLED technology.

In April 2023, Samsung Display announced the construction of the world's first 8.6th generation AMOLED production line, and the products will be used for tablets, laptops, etc.; in November of the same year, BOE announced the construction of the country's first 8.6th generation AMOLED production line, also aiming at IT panel applications.

Liang Xinqing believes that the construction of the new production line will bring higher production efficiency, lower production costs, and higher quality products, while promoting collaborative innovation among upstream and downstream of the industry chain, and promoting the value of the entire industry chain to rise.
